MUMBAI: A little after noon on Saturday, civil rights activists Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, who had been in custody for nearly five years in the Elgar Parishad case, were released from Taloja jail.
They were granted bail by the Supreme Court last week. Their release was delayed as, setting additional bail conditions on Monday, the special NIA court rejected their plea to allow them to furnish temporary cash bail, and stated that they have to “furnish PR bond of Rs 50,000 with two solvent sureties in the like amount.”
Gonsalves accompanied by his wife Susan Abraham reached his residence in Andheri East at 5.40pm. Unlike the past, when cops were posted outside in the compound, Saturday was a day to breathe freely. A few young visitors were present in the house when Gonsalves arrived, including his niece.
