NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday extended “for a further period of six months” the validity of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland that were last declared as ‘disturbed area’ under the Act.
This follows a review of the law and order situation in both the states.
Three districts in Arunachal Pradesh – Tirap, Changlang and Longding – and the area falling under three police stations of Namsai, Mahadevpur and Chowkham in Namsai district have been declared as ‘disturbed’ for a further period of six months with until March 31, 2024.
In Nagaland, akin to the order issued under Section 3 of AFSPA on March 24, 2023, eight entire districts and 21 police stations in five other districts were declared as “disturbed areas” under AFSPA for a further six months until March 31, 2024. The eight districts in the ‘distrubed’ list are Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek and Peren, while the areas falling under jurisdiction of Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza and Kezocha police stations in Kohima district; Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem and Anaki ‘C’ police stations in Mokokchung district; Yanglok police station in Longleng district; Bhandari, Champang and Ralan police stations in Wokha district; and Ghatashi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto and Aghunato police stations in Zunheboto district will also carry ‘disturbed’ tag for a further period of six months from October 1, 2023.
