Bolivia’s First Direct Reduction Plant Begins Production
Tenova HYL, a leading Tenova company in the field of direct reduction, has successfully commissioned its ENERGIRON Zero-Reformer DR Micro-Module at Empresa Siderurgica del Mutún in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and directly reduced (DRI) its first iron ore on October 7.
This important milestone in the contract with Sinosteel Equipment and Engineering, a global Chinese EPC contractor specializing in industrial planning, equipment supply and turnkey project delivery in the mining, metals and infrastructure sectors, marks a significant step in the long-standing cooperation between Tenova and Sinosteel.
Modern technology with high performance
The advanced and cost-effective DR Micro-Module utilizes the state-of-the-art ENERGIRON Zero-Reformer (ZR) process. ENERGIRON is a technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli. The plant will produce 250,000 tons of DRI annually, making it the first direct reduction plant in Bolivia. It will supply the smelter with high-quality DRI exhibiting a metallization level of 94 percent and an adjustable high carbon content in the range of 3 to 4 percent.
Integration into a larger steel complex
The DRI plant will be integrated into a larger steel complex comprising seven facilities: processing, pelletizing, direct reduction (DRP), steelworks, rolling mill, power plant, and auxiliary facilities. This development represents a significant advancement for the green steel industry in the region and will meet nearly half of the country’s steel needs.
This success not only underlines Tenova’s commitment and technical excellence, but also strengthens its position as a leading provider of DRI technology.
Stefano Maggiolino, President and CEO of Tenova HYL, commented: “We are proud to be part of this strategic project together with EMS and Sinosteel and drive the sustainable industrial development of Bolivia. Our team showed commitment to technical excellence, which has made this achievement possible. Thanks to our innovative DRI technology, we are helping shape the future of the region’s green steel industry.”
