NOIDA: Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait on Saturday joined an ongoing protest related to the peasant community at Greater Noida. A prominent face and spokesperson of the influential Bharatiya Kisan Union, Tikait reached the Zero Point, where hundreds of protestors are camping, on a tractor.
“Took part in the farmer-labourer mahapanchayat organised at the Zero Point in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh and addressed the panchayat,” Tikait posted on X, formerly Twitter.
“The government cannot suppress the voice of farmers by filing fake cases. Our struggle for the farmers of the country will continue till our last breath,” he posted in Hindi.
BKU members are staging an indefinite protest in Greater Noida over issues like higher compensation for the land of villagers acquired by government in the past, the union’s local functionary Subhash Choudhary said.
During an official visit to Greater Noida two days ago, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya had said the government has directed officials of local authorities in Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway to resolve the issues of farmers on priority.
