Innovative Manufacturing Solutions by Mazak: A Look into the Future
Mazak is inviting West Coast manufacturers from key high-tech sectors—including semiconductor, aerospace, medical, space launch, electric vehicle (EV), and defense—to attend its DISCOVER MORE WITH MAZAK event in Fremont, California. Held May 7-8 at the Mazak Northern California Technical Center, this two-day event will spotlight the company’s latest advancements in machine tool technology, demonstrated through live machining of real-world components.
Providing manufacturers with the knowledge and tools to make more and do more, the event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day with lunch served from noon to 2:00 p.m. The technology demonstrated will include advanced systems for Multi-Tasking, HYBRID Multi-Tasking, vertical milling and full 5-axis machining.
Under the Multi-Tasking and HYBRID Multi-Tasking umbrellas, event visitors will experience Mazak’s INTEGREX i-250H ST, QT-Ez 10MY and VC-Ez 16 equipped with Friction Stir Welding (FSW) capability. With the power of a full CNC turning center and the versatility of a full-function machining center, the popular INTEGREX i-250H ST features a second turning spindle (S) for DONE IN ONE machining, along with a milling spindle and lower turret (T) with optional rotary tool capabilities. The configuration minimizes fixturing, part handling and non-cut time to boost productivity.
The Kentucky-built QT-Ez 10MY Turning Center allows for both turning and milling as well as Y-axis off-centerline capability. Their Ez Series machines provide affordability without sacrificing performance and allow for seamless automation integration.
Their automation helps manufacturers overcome shortages in skilled labor and keep up with ever increasing production demands. For those reasons, Mazak developed the EzLOADER stand-alone, plug-and-play cobot that uses a pallet, a programmable logic controller and all necessary equipment for hassle-free machine integration.
The featured VC-Ez 16 Vertical Machining Center with FSW takes multi-tasking beyond subtractive machining operations to HYBRID Multi-Tasking. The solid-state joining process uses frictional heat and forging pressure with a non-consumable tool to join two metal plates without melting the workpiece. Commonly considered a forging process, FSW creates full-penetration, defect-free welded joints stronger than conventional methods and is well-suited for joining alloys with low melting points, including aluminum, copper and brass, among others. The process is ideal for many semiconductor and electronics applications.
On the subtractive machining side, the VC-Ez 16 comes standard with a 25 hp, 12,000 rpm spindle, and a versatile 29.5 hp, 15,000 rpm spindle is available as an option. A highly efficient 30-tool auto tool changer (50-tool optional) keeps the machine’s spindle supplied with tools for long production runs. Mazak also offers a full range of auto tool changer and chip/coolant management options for the machine.
For shops, especially those in the semiconductor industry, seeking high-precision full 5-axis machining, Mazak will feature the new VARIAXIS i-700 NEO Vertical Machining Center. The machine will demonstrate efficient multi-surface contour milling of a semiconductor component during the event.
For machining workpieces in single setups for shorter production cycle times, the VARIAXIS i-700 NEO machine sports full gantry construction that ensures stable machining accuracy and minimizes vibration during acceleration/deceleration. This single table, 20,000-rpm, HSK 63 full 5-axis machine is ideal for feature rich, complex components with long cycle times.
Temperature-controlled cooling oil circulates around machine spindle bearings, headstocks and ball screw cores to minimize thermal change to spindles and to allow high-speed operation. Precision is also enhanced with linear roller guides on the X, Y and Z axes for high-accuracy positioning.
