The photograph of the lander Vikram, the lander of Chandrayaan-3 was recently captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) of the American space agency NASA.
The Chandrayaan-3 mission, India’s third to the moon, was the first spacecraft to successfully softland on the moon’s south pole.
According to a tweet by NASA on X (formerly Twitter), the LRO took the picture of Vikram Lander on August 27, just four days after the historic soft-landing on the moon’s south pole. In its tweet, NASA said:
“@NASA’s LRO spacecraft recently imaged the Chandrayaan-3 lander on the Moon’s surface. The ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) Chandrayaan-3 touched down on Aug. 23, 2023, about 600 kilometers from the Moon’s South Pole.”
NASA has shared the information that the LRO camera acquired an oblique view (42-degree slew angle) of the lander four days later. The bright halo around the vehicle resulted from the rocket plume interacting with the fine-grained regolith (soil).
