CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange agreed on Tuesday to withdraw his 14-day-long hunger strike, but warned that the agitation would be resumed if the government failed to grant OBC quota rights to the community within the next 30 days.
In Antarwali Sarati village of Jalna district, Jarange outlined specific conditions for the conclusion of his hunger strike. He requested the presence of CM Eknath Shinde, deputy CMs Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis, the state cabinet, Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosale, and Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje in the village when he breaks his fast. He has also sought written assurances from the state government regarding the quota demand.
Jarange declared his intention to remain at the protest site until the demand is met and scheduled a meeting for October 12. His expectations include the recognition of the entire Maratha community in the state as Kunbi and the initiation of the distribution of OBC certificates within a month.
The state home department suspended Tuesday two senior police officers in connection with the lathi-charge in Antarwali Sarati village. The suspended officers are Jalna’s additional SP Rahul Khade and Ambad sub-divisional police officer Mukund Aghav. Their suspension marks the initiation of detailed disciplinary proceedings in accordance with the law.
Speaking in Jalgaon, chief minister Shinde and his deputy Ajit Pawar expressed the government’s commitment to providing reservation to the Maratha community.
