Paving the way for timely completion of the already stuck Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) e-mobility project connecting Delhi with Meerut, the Supreme Court of India on Monday has directed the Delhi government to release Rs 415 crore for the said project.
The court in its order directed the Delhi government to disburse the required funds for India’s first regional train service, called RAPIDX. The project is executed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). Meanwhile the Delhi government has maintained that the funds for the project will be released within 2 months.
The court directive comes days after the Delhi government refused to fund the project citing the scarcity of funds. The matter was subsequently taken to the apex court. According to the Centre, RAPIDX is a Rs 30,000 crore project, which is jointly funded by multilateral institutions (60%), and by central and state governments.
As per government data, the share of funding by the Union government in the RAPIDX project stands at 20% while the states of Delhi has to bear 3.5% cost of the project. The Uttar Pradesh government will bear 16.5% project cost.
Under the project about 82-kilometre (km) Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor, around 14 km lies in Delhi. The project has a 17-km-long priority section of the RAPIDX, which is ready to begin operations. This portion, in Uttar Pradesh, has five stations—Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai Depot.
