JAIPUR: Tension flared in the Walled City of Jaipur on Saturday following the death of a youth from the minority com-munity after he was assault-ed the previous night by a mob over a “road rage misunderstanding” while happening to pass through a spotwhere two bikes had collided.
Iqbal Raza, 18,was struck with a “rod-like weapon”, collapsed and was rushed to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The police said the primary probe suggests the victim was not involved in the accident between the two motorcycles.
According to the FIR lodged by Iqbal’s 16-year-old brother, he and his brother (the victim) were travelling on a scooter from their grandmother’s house to their own house when they were attacked around 10:30pm in the Subash Nagar area by “10 to 15 people”. Jaipur police commissioner Biju George Joseph hinted at “some kind of misunderstanding, similar to what occurs in road rage-like situations”. Fifteen suspects have been detained so far and CCTV footage is being examined before they are formally arrested, an officer said.By Saturday morning, a large crowd gathered from nearby minority-dominated areas, prompting police to beef up deployments. The protesters demanded the arrest of the accused, financial aid for Iqbal’s family and government job for one of his kin.
