A study conducted by SEBI revealed that trading by individual traders in the equity F&O segment was dominated by males with over 80% participation in FY19. The gap further widened to 84% males in the F&O space in FY22, leaving female participation at a mere 16%. This research was conducted on a sample size of 45.2 lakh traders (in FY22).

In the tumultuous arena of futures and options, the pronounced gender disparity persists, driven by a myriad of factors deeply rooted in historical biases, societal expectations, and, notably, the inherent risk-taking nature ingrained in males since prehistoric times.
Throughout history, men have often taken on the role of hunters and risk-takers, a characteristic that evolved from the demands of prehistoric survival. This innate disposition has manifested in various aspects of contemporary society, including the financial realm. The high-risk nature of futures and options trading, with its potential for significant gains and losses, aligns with the archetypal risk appetite associated with the male psyche.
Societal expectations, stemming from these historical roles, further contribute to the gender disparity in financial markets. Traditional gender norms have perpetuated the idea that men are better suited for bold, speculative ventures, while women are expected to adhere to more conservative financial approaches. This narrative, deeply embedded in societal consciousness, dissuades women from venturing into the intricate landscape of derivatives trading.
Additionally, the lack of targeted financial education compounds the issue. Women often find themselves excluded from programs tailored to demystify the complexities of futures and options trading. Bridging this educational gap is essential, not only to equip women with the requisite knowledge but also to challenge the prevailing notion that these markets are exclusively the domain of men.
To address the gender imbalance in futures and options, we must acknowledge and confront the inherent risk-taking nature instilled in males since ancient times. Simultaneously, fostering an inclusive financial culture and providing targeted education for women will play pivotal roles in dismantling barriers and paving the way for a more equitable future in the high-stakes world of trading. Only through a holistic approach can we reshape perceptions and ensure that both genders feel empowered to navigate the risks and rewards of futures and options trading.
